What is Sensitive Storytelling?

Sensitive storytelling is about listening to people, understanding their emotional boundaries, and validating their lived experience.

– Will Cordukes

Sensitive storytelling is giving people ownership of their narrative and ensuring that they are not defined by their circumstances. We are experts in sensitive storytelling at Laundry Lane having worked extensively with healthcare and not-for-profit clients.

We take every persons story seriously and always want to tell someone’s story with heart, sensitivity and empathy. A sensitive approach begins as soon as you contact the person who has offered to share their story. When someone chooses to share their story they may have experienced hardship, loss or trauma so a sensitive approach is essential in maintaining the dignity and wellbeing of the interviewee.

4 Tips to Approach Sensitive Storytelling.

Empower.

Create space and opportunity for people to share their story.

Build Trust.

Allow time before and after filming and production.

Listen, don’t lead.

Empathise and validate.

Avoid stereotyping.

Show the whole person, don’t define them by their circumstances.
