Each fortnight, “Video With…” dives into the best of the video world, from TV commercials to TikToks. There are just two criteria: the video must align with the week’s theme and must have the power to cut through the noise.
Our themes are inspired by conversations happening in the Laundry Lane office, ranging from “Videos with Mascots” to “Videos with Jingles.” The possibilities are endless.
What does “cut through” mean? It’s a video that stops the scroll, even if just for a moment. It might make us laugh, teach us something new, showcase beautiful craftsmanship, or evoke strong emotions (shock, awe, delight, horror, you name it).
“Video With…” is part investigation, part treasure hunt. Our goal is to inspire you to try something new in your marketing and communications journey and to explore the engaging and creative world of video production.
After dialling into the closing ceremony this morning, the team had to come to grips with the fact that the olympics fanfare is over for another four years. Gone are the mornings checking the medal tally at the coffee machine, the couch critiquing of the synchronised divers, the reading up of the water quality of the Seine and the mimicry of the Kath and Kel homage that was the Race Walk and back to the void of endless scrolling through Netflix.
But it’s not all bad.
Last week, we asked the Laundry Lane team to share their favourite videos that include olympians – past, present and future. So this morning, we are jumping into a time machine to relive some of the best of the best.
Will Cordukes:
Gotta be Eddy the Eagle from ’88 – remember kids?
Akrom Binkanee:
This short animation done for the 2016 Rio Olympics is incredibly dynamic, and truly highlights the high level of energy that is shown in the highly anticipated global sporting event. I love the way the animators morphed the different types of athletes together, using the olympic ring as the transitional device that connects them all.
Rhea Kamath:
Australian insurance and olympics don’t make for the easiest brief, but this video made me feel a blend of nostalgia for the clumsiness and hopefulness of childhoods past but also an excitement for the kids of today and tomorrow.
Charmaine Kwok:
This Nike commercial captures the energy and anticipation of the Olympics. The editors did an amazing job building excitement by starting the video at a slow pace and then accelerating with quick cuts toward the end. Combined with the powerful sound design, every word spoken by Sha’Carri Richardson resonates with impact.
Jade Stewart:
The immersive sound design/music, choice of colours and how the narrative flows and blends with the visuals.
Elena de Bruijne:
Rugby isn’t played underwater…so it is unusual which draws me in..the music, very traditional and typical chanting of Pacific countries, also very emotive…lots of action..cool! and beautifully shot!
If you’ve made it this far, here’s a free spot of trivia that you can dole out in the lunchroom today. The Paris Olympics racked up over 1.3 million posts on TikTok which was a 1,828% increase on Tokyo Games!!! And the broadcast and 9Now coverage of the Olympics saw 10.5 million average daily viewers.
If you’ve seen any videos that feature olympians that have captured your attention, share them in the comments below.
Until next time.
